Scholarships for Students in India: How to Find and Apply
Every year, many deserving students miss out on scholarships simply because they did not know about them or missed the deadline. Scholarships can cover tuition fees, books, hostel costs and more. Here is how to find and apply for them.
Types of scholarships
- Merit-based: awarded for strong academic results or entrance exam ranks
- Need-based: for students from lower-income families
- Category-based: for SC, ST, OBC, minority and other eligible groups
- Scholarships for girls, to encourage higher education
- Talent and sports scholarships
- Course-specific: for engineering, medicine, research and more
- Institute scholarships offered by colleges and coaching institutes
Where to find scholarships
- National Scholarship Portal (scholarships.gov.in), which lists many central and state government schemes
- Your state government’s scholarship portal
- Your school, college or university scholarship office
- Private foundations and company CSR programmes
- Coaching institutes, many of which run scholarship tests
Documents you usually need
- Mark sheets and certificates of previous classes
- Income certificate of the family
- Caste or category certificate, if applicable
- Aadhaar card
- Bank account details, often linked to Aadhaar
- Admission proof or fee receipt from your institution
- Passport-size photograph
Tips for a successful application
- Start early: keep certificates ready before portals open
- Note every deadline and apply well before the last date
- Fill details exactly as they appear on official documents
- Keep copies of submitted forms and acknowledgement numbers
- Check application status regularly and respond to queries
- Renew existing scholarships on time each year
Beware of scholarship scams
Genuine government scholarships do not ask you to pay a fee to apply or to "release" your scholarship. Apply only through official portals and your institution, and never share OTPs or passwords.
